Few news stories about the British royal family have had as much impact as the one that came out of the United States this week. Thomas Markle, father of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material. The news became one of the most searched topics in Costa Rica, according to Google Trends interest data, but behind the headline is a criminal case that is still ongoing and deserves a more measured reading.
This article does not aim to judge anyone. Its purpose is to organize what is known, point out what has not yet been confirmed, and explain why a case like this requires care in reporting.
What is known so far
According to El Observador CR, the information was first disseminated by CBS and later confirmed by the U.S. Department of Justice. According to those reports, the arrest took place at a senior living residence in Florida, where Thomas Markle, 82, lives. CR Hoy agrees on the age and the state of Florida, and notes that the detention took place on a Friday.
The starting point, according to both sources, was a complaint filed by Thomas Markle Jr., the accused’s eldest son. He reportedly gave police in the Philippines images of alleged child sexual abuse found in a home he shared with his father. From there, Philippine authorities reviewed devices and, according to CR Hoy, reported about 7,500 photographs and one video in the first reviews. Later, in Mexico, a storage unit linked to the accused was searched, which opened a second line of investigation.
The Department of Justice, according to El Observador CR, maintains that the formal case in the United States relates to two storage units in the Los Angeles area that the accused rented for almost two decades. Authorities describe the content as child sexual abuse material, including sexually explicit photographs of the accused himself with prepubescent girls. This claim is serious and, for now, reflects the version of the authorities.
Thomas Markle has denied the accusations. In an interview with the Daily Mail, according to El Observador CR, he called them “disgusting lies.” CR Hoy reports the same denial and adds that he stated he had no knowledge of such material on his devices. He is expected to appear before a Florida court to be formally charged.
Where the contradictions are
A case that spans several countries produces different versions, and it is worth pointing them out. The two sources do not always agree on the details:
- The location of the residence: one report mentions Maravida Senior Living and the other mentions Lakeland. Both locations are in Florida and may refer to the same place, but the sources do not clarify this.
- The origin of the case: CR Hoy places the start in the Philippines and Mexico. El Observador CR adds that the formal charge is based on storage units in Los Angeles.
- The figures: El Observador CR mentions about 78 items seized, such as slides, negatives and books. CR Hoy mentions about 7,500 photographs and one video found in Cebu. They may be part of different findings, but the sources do not explain this.
- The accused’s health: El Observador CR indicates that he has dementia. CR Hoy refers to health problems, without further details.
These differences do not change the seriousness of the case, but they matter for any precise reading. It is advisable to wait for the court documents and official communications before considering the details settled.
Meghan Markle’s place in the story
Meghan Markle does not appear as a defendant in any of the sources. According to El Observador CR, she has no contact with her father and, at the end of October, revealed that in 2018 the Metropolitan Police Service (Scotland Yard) had informed her of a series of “disturbing allegations” related to him. That same month, she expressed concern for the children who may have been affected. CR Hoy reports that she has said her estrangement and her decision to keep him away from her children are intended to protect them.
