Spiritual age is the subjective perception of the age we feel internally, a sensation that can differ from our chronological or biological age. This internal age not only influences how we behave and interact with the world, but it can also have a real impact on our physical and mental health. Scientific studies have shown that people who feel younger tend to have better brain and physical health, while those who perceive themselves as older may face higher risks of hospitalization and mental health issues. In this post, we will explore how spiritual age can affect different aspects of our lives and how to identify our own.

What is spiritual age?

It is an internal essence, a perception that many people can identify. While chronological age reflects the time that has passed since our birth, and biological age shows the state of our body, this age reveals how we truly feel inside. Some people may feel eternally young, while others have always had an innate maturity. This perception can remain stable throughout life, similar to a zodiac sign, and influence our actions and daily choices.

Impact on physical and mental health

Numerous studies suggest that spiritual age affects how we perceive life and our health. A 2018 South Korean study showed that people who feel younger than they are have a higher brain matter density and less cognitive decline. On the other hand, those who perceive themselves as older are at greater risk of hospitalization, depressive symptoms, and sleep disorders. These findings indicate that the way we feel about our age can influence healthy aging and quality of life.

How it influences personal relationships

It can also affect our connections with others. It is common to surround ourselves with people of a similar internal age, as this facilitates mutual understanding and comfort in interactions. Sharing a spiritual age with friends or family can create the feeling of being “life companions” beyond the difference in chronological age. This deep connection transcends real age and strengthens emotional bonds.

Is spiritual age determined by circumstances or is it innate?

While social circumstances, such as the lack of traditional milestones in millennial adulthood, can influence our internal perception, this age also seems to be innate. Some people seem to have been born with a special maturity, while others retain a youthful spark no matter how old they get. This internal essence could be a fundamental component of our identity.

Spiritual age is a fascinating concept that reveals how we truly feel inside and how that perception affects our lives. Beyond the years we’ve lived, what matters is how we approach life and the connections we form with those who share a similar internal age. The next time you’re asked your age, it might be worth responding not with a number, but with the true age you feel inside. It could be an important key to healthy aging, better quality of life, and greater happiness over time.
