The motorcycle license theory test in Costa Rica will undergo significant changes starting in the second half of 2025. Those interested in riding a motorcycle must prepare in advance to meet the new requirements established by the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).

New format and exclusive manual

The test will retain its current structure of 40 multiple-choice questions, with a 45-minute time limit for completion. Starting in late 2025, applicants for A1, A2, and A3 licenses will be required to study from an exclusive manual for motorcyclists. This new resource will replace the general manual previously used and will be available once the printing and distribution process is complete.

Requirements to pass the test

To pass the motorcycle license theory test, applicants must correctly answer at least 32 out of 40 questions, which corresponds to a score of 70. If the test is failed, it can be retaken after paying the required fee and waiting the time specified by the MOPT.

How to register for the test

Registration must be completed exclusively through the official Educación Vial website. There, you can complete both the registration and the payment process. If you passed the theory course in previous years, it remains valid and does not need to be retaken.

Preparation tips

It’s essential to study the updated manual as soon as it becomes available. In addition, taking mock tests will help you get familiar with the format. Visiting the Educación Vial website regularly ensures access to the most up-to-date official information. If you need extra help, you can also rely on prep courses or mobile apps.

The motorcycle license theory test in Costa Rica will change starting in the second semester of 2025. Studying the new manual, practicing with mock exams, and staying informed are key to passing successfully. With proper preparation, getting your license will be a smoother and more efficient process.
