Scheduled power outages

In the coming weeks, electricity consumers may face scheduled service interruptions, as announced by ICE tonight. Although exact schedules and durations have not been specified yet, the likelihood of these interruptions occurring is increasing. Roberto Quirós, electricity manager at ICE, explained that these interruptions are expected to last no more than two hours.

ICE has activated the Procedure for Electric Rationing Coordination following ARESEP regulations, due to declining energy reserve levels in the National Electric System. This announcement is part of the established protocol to address a potential shortage of resources to meet the country’s electricity demand. The possibility of rationing is attributed to the impact of the current El Niño phenomenon, which has critically reduced the water flow in hydroelectric plants.

As the main electricity provider in the country, Grupo ICE ensures that electricity supply for the industrial sector, high-voltage customers, hospitals, and major health centers will remain uninterrupted and will not be affected by these measures. The corporation is committed to maintaining constant and timely communication regarding the development of this situation.

These interruptions in electricity supply could have repercussions on various aspects of citizens’ daily lives, affecting the operation of household appliances and the functionality of businesses and enterprises reliant on electricity for their commercial activities. Users must be prepared for these potential interruptions and take necessary measures to minimize their impact. Additionally, staying informed through official announcements from Grupo ICE is recommended to remain updated on any changes or developments regarding these scheduled interruptions.

ICE acknowledges 'human error' at the Garabito thermal plant, causing power outages in Central America

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) has acknowledged that a “human error” at the Garabito thermal plant in Puntarenas was the cause of a series of power outages across Central America. For safety reasons, this incident led to Costa Rica’s automatic disconnection from the Regional Electricity System, which facilitates the buying and selling of energy among regional countries in the electricity market.

The effects of this error were immediately felt, with outages initially affecting Costa Rican communities served by these 20 distribution lines, and later spreading to Panama, Honduras, and Nicaragua, causing blackouts in these areas.

ICE has admitted that the electrical distribution system at Garabito resulted in the loss of 187 MW of generation due to a “coordination error.” This incident underscores the importance of maintaining high standards of safety and coordination in the electricity sector to prevent massive disruptions in energy supply.
