Fendi’s Centennial Runway Show began with an emotional nod to the brand’s family history. Silvia Fendi recalled her first encounter with the brand in 1966 when Karl Lagerfeld invited her to walk the runway in an equestrian outfit at just six years old. This time, her grandchildren, Tazio and Dardo, recreated that moment by opening the doors to Fendi’s original workshop, symbolizing the continuity of the creative lineage.

A Tribute Without Nostalgia

More than a mere tribute to the past, the collection reflected the essence of Fendi through emotion and adrenaline. Silvia included symbolic details without relying on literal references, such as the knitted caps with mesh, inspired by her grandmother Adele’s style. Additionally, the infinity-shaped hairstyles strengthened the connection between generations.

Balance Between the Masculine and the Feminine

The runway show showcased a fusion of feminine and masculine pieces. Fabrics like mohair in gradients, elaborate embroidery, and cashmere polo shirts stood out. While the masculine pieces were notable, the feminine fashion predominated, reflecting the leadership of three generations of women in the brand.

Innovation in Leathers and Craftsmanship

Fendi, known for its mastery of leather, showcased an evolution in its use. Only two pieces in mink were included in the collection, while collarless coats and dresses with mohair or shearling fronts were designed as detachable stoles. This approach reinforced the brand’s commitment to innovation alongside its announcement of the opening of a new leather atelier in Milan.

A Journey Through the Decades

The collection integrated elements from different eras without fitting into anyone. Dropped-waist lace dresses evoked the twenties, checkered sets called to mind the fifties, while Pequin stripes and padded leather structured shoulders alluded to the seventies and eighties. Silvia Fendi emphasized that her goal was to highlight the timeless beauty of design.

A Legacy That Transcends Time

From Karl Lagerfeld’s introduction of prêt-à-porter in 1977 to Silvia’s direction after his passing in 2019, Fendi has evolved without losing its essence. Fendi’s Centennial Runway Show not only honored the brand’s history but also demonstrated its relevance today. If this celebration leaves as deep an impact on Tazio and Dardo as it did on Silvia in 1966, Fendi’s creative future is secured for many more decades.
