What is the Costa Rican digital ID card?

The Costa Rican digital ID card is an electronic version of the national ID. It will function through a mobile app or e-wallet. It will store personal data, biometric records, and fingerprints. It holds the same legal validity as the physical ID. Citizens can use it for transactions with banks, public offices, electoral processes, and private services without needing the physical document.

Availability and how to request it

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has set September 2025 as the deadline for the launch. Applications must be submitted online through the official TSE website. Applicants need to have a valid physical ID and up-to-date biometric data. The process costs ₡2,600 (subject to change). Once verified, users can download the digital ID from the official app.

What happens to the physical ID?

The physical ID will remain valid and free. The TSE will continue to issue it as an essential service. The Costa Rican digital ID card will be an optional alternative for greater convenience.

Benefits of the digital ID card

This new format improves security and reduces identity fraud. Other key benefits include:

  • Faster banking and public transactions.
  • No need to carry a physical ID.
  • Participation in elections using only the app.
  • Fewer in-person visits and reduced paper use.
