Flight AI171 departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport with 242 people on board. Shortly after, at an altitude of around 190 meters, the aircraft lost contact. A “Mayday” distress call was the last message received before radar contact was lost.

Crash into a residential zone and university hospital

The plane crashed into Meghani Nagar, a residential area. The impact hit a building housing medical students from B.J. Medical College and a hospital. Parts of the fuselage were scattered around, and the aircraft’s tail got stuck on the building’s upper floor.

Only one person survived

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen, was the sole survivor. He was seated in 11A. He was hospitalized and stated he heard a loud noise. Just 30 seconds after takeoff, the crash happened.

The cause is still under investigation

Authorities are still examining the causes of the AI171 Air India flight crash. The aircraft descended uncontrollably, with no signs of fire or smoke before impact. The Indian government has deployed resources for rescue and support to victims. The United Kingdom is also involved in the investigation.
