The initiative arises from the concern over the large amount of organic waste constituting a significant portion of household waste in France. Around one-third of this waste is of organic origin, including food scraps, vegetable peels, and garden waste. Previously, the separation of biowaste was only mandatory for certain generators of large quantities of organic waste, but now it extends to all households and businesses.
The new regulation requires each household and business to have a dedicated container for biowaste collection, thus facilitating its subsequent processing. Municipalities must also provide door-to-door collection options or voluntary drop-off points to ensure accessibility to this sorting system.
The French government backs this transition with significant investments, allocating funds from the Green Fund and the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe). These investments are intended to facilitate the transformation of organic waste into sustainable resources, such as compost and fertilizers, thereby reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers in agriculture.
